Here's to my first blog post!!!
I can honestly say it feels so good to finally document my travels. I never really found an outlet to showcase my travel photos or had the time to write about them other than when I'm on a plane or train. But I'm so happy to share with you my photos from my trip to Portugal in September 2016. These first few photos are shot in the iconic and beautiful city of Lisbon!
If you follow me on social media then you might know that my family is from Portugal and this is why I visit pretty often. Ericeira is a small beach town about 30 minutes northwest of Lisbon. My whole Portuguese side of my family still lives there except for my dad who moved to the US many years ago. This year was a big year for Ericeira. Every 17 years, they have a huge festival to celebrate a Catholic belief in which Mary came to this fisherman town and helps guide all the fisherman to shore during a storm. This festival is in honor of her keeping all the fisherman of this town safe. But it was very interesting attending an event that is religious yet a party. There's a mass in one block and the one block over you can find 1 euro sangrias and a club with American music blasting. I must admit it was absolutely breath-taking watching the fireworks over the ocean. I've never seen a more beautiful firework display in my life.
There's something about being back in my family's hometown that feels like my home away from home, even though I've never actually lived there myself. The things I love most about visiting every year is staying up late and watching the Portuguese concerts in the square, traditionally having a shot of espresso before bed (would not recommend, it's a Portuguese thing apparently), enjoying my family's company, and HAVING THE BEST FOOD IN THE WORLD.
This trip was pretty special because a couple of my friends finally joined up with me in Portugal. My friends Casey and Lionel (which by the way are amazing and talented artists and you should check out their band, Tigers in The Sky!) came and met my boyfriend Nick and I in Lisbon at an airbnb then headed to my family's house in Ericeira for a few days. We had some pretty good times I wish I could write down all the funny moments we had. I remember one in particular, when my aunt and uncle were flaunting their AMAZINGLY DELICIOUS wines and liquor and they just kept coming, to the point where my aunt just pulled some old cherries she's been fermenting under the sink to make cherry liquor. Man, it was all so good! A little too good and I wish I remembered what else happened after enjoying all that wine and liquor. Oops..
If you've never been to Portugal, I would absolutely recommend it! It's one of my favorite places in the whole wide world. But of course, I'm a little biased.
